New Asphalt Paving Overlay for Santa Ana Businesses

This week at Empire Parking Lot Services, we performed an asphalt overlay in Santa Ana California . Santa Ana is located in Orange County and considered to be a historic city. This city was founded over a hundred years ago mainly as a cattle and farming city. Today Santa Ana is best known for  its financial and government agencies and many small business. One of these businesses called us to bid on a asphalt overlay project for their parking lot. Our estimator gave them a great price and they signed a contract for the job. Our estimator had also noticed that a shared driveway needed asphalt repair as well. He made a quick a visit with the neighboring business and discussed the cost to repair the driveway for them. After a having a conversation with the owner our estimator was able to give them a competitive price that met their budget. With both projects combined Empire Parking Lot Services installed over 110 tons of new asphalt in the form of an asphalt overlay. In addition to the asphalt installed Empire was hired to grind the edges of the concrete slabs and flow lines located throughout the parking lot. In total Empire paved close to 20,000 square feet of asphalt overlay, and will return to the project in thirty days to seal and stripe the lots and driveways.

About this Santa Ana Paving Project

As mentioned above this project included the installation of 20,000 square feet of asphalt overlay. Our crews arrived at the project at 6:00 am. The work areas were closed off and barricaded for safety. These parking lots were very dirt and we ended filling up an entire 8 ton dump truck with dust, dirt, nails and debris. Once cleaned we proceeded to do all of the grinding along the concrete edges. Grinding ensures that when the new asphalt is installed if remains flush with the concrete edge. This avoids drainage issues as well as potential trip hazards that can form from too much asphalt. Once the grinding was done we applied a heavy coat of tack material. Tack or "tack coat" is a sticky liquid emulsion that is made of oil byproducts (think roofing tar). A even application of tack coat insures the binding of the new asphalt to the old. The next step for us was to scatter sand on all concrete flow lines and pads surrounding the new pave areas. This helps minimize any tracking of tack coat on to the concrete when the material trucks start to arrive. Lastly, the new asphalt was installed, rolled and compacted to a maximum density. With the project finished all that was left was cleanup and breakdown of the safety barricades. All in all the project was a huge success.
