Curb Paint Failure "Why & What"
Over the years Empire PLS has received dozens of calls from people having curb paint adhesion problems. Here are some possible reasons for why your curb paint failure is occurring and what you need to know to do next.
Types of Paint Failure
Curb Paint is Flaking on Freshly Poured Curbs:
When concrete curbs are poured on new construction projects they typically take weeks to fully cure. During this curing process concrete can give off a fine dust that coats the entire surface. If this dust isn’t removed with a pressure washer or garden hose before they are painted then this type of failure can occur. An easy technique to test the freshly poured concrete is to wipe your hand over the surface and look for the dust on your hand. The more dust present the more likely failure can occur.
Curb Paint is Flaking all Over Evenly:
When you see paint failure on your curbs all over the place this is more than likely the cause of two incompatible products. The most typical scenario is when one curb painting contractor paints your curbs with an oil base paint and then a year later you hire another paint contractor and he paint them with a water based curb paint. This is the kiss of death for any painter that doesn’t understand that you cannot place water based paint over oil based paint. The water based paint simply will not stick to the oil based painted surface.
Curb Paint is Popping in Small Areas:
This is by far the most common reason for failure on curbs. This type of damage typically occurs when curbs are painted without preparation of any kind. Small pockets of dirt, grease, gum and old flaking paint get painted over, and though it may look great for a month or two they slowly start to pop off because of the weather and air temperatures changing. As weather goes from hot to cold those areas of the surface that have those foreign elements under the paint will start to fail. The paint didn’t adhere to the surface and the weather causes the paint to expand and contract. With no solid surface to bond to, the paint will start to “crack and pop”.
Curb Paint is bubbeling all Over:
The last type of failur that is prevelant on curb painting projects is the dreaded bubbeling. Paint bubbling can be filled under the “did not prep the surface before painting” category. Typically, this type of condition is caused when moisture is painted over. What many contractors fail to realize is that, when they paint over curbs that are chipped and flaking badly without prepping the curb, they are painting over tiny pockets of water. For weeks the water will sit under the new coat of paint without incident. Then what happens is warm weather will cause the paint to bubble, as the water tries to expand and escape the paint below. If you take a scraper and pop one of those bubbles you will often see moisture is present.
