A rumble strip is a traffic calming device that is far less jarring then a traditional speed bump or berm. Basically the rumble strip is created by placing several rows of ceramic or reflective markers in an offset pattern in rows of 5 to 6 lines. When vehicles travel over a rumble strip they are reminded to slow down by the strips loud vibration. The faster a vehicle goes the louder the noise is made by the vehicle. Furthermore, the slower the vehicle is traveling the less noise is made. Ultimately over time, drivers have been shown to change their driving speeds where rumble strips are installed. Another advantage of the rumble strip is that they are far less dangerous in terms of potential damage to a vehicles.

Rumble Strip Consideration

There are two primary uses of rumble strips as a traffic calming measure

  • Rumble strips can provide advance warning of a change in driving conditions such as vehicle traffic/pedestrian traffic etc. By example, one can be used in conjunction with stenciling and line marking services to alert drivers that they are entering an area where pedestrian traffic is increasing. or children are playing.
  • Rumble Strips serve as sound and feedback reminders for drivers to slow down.
