What is Asphalt Patching?

Asphalt patching is the repair process involving the filling of potholes or excavated areas of existing asphalt pavement with new asphalt mix. Our patching is done with skill and safety in mind.  By quickly responding to these types of asphalt damage you help control increased future deterioration as well as cost.  If these areas are ignored and water is allowed to penetrate the sub grade much larger areas of asphalt failure can occur. Asphalt Patching is the appropriate process for repair on any localized asphalt distress.

What is a deep patch?

A deep patch is considered a permanent repair to a pothole or eroded area of distressed asphalt.  Once a pothole reaches a size larger than 2 feet by 2 feet you are looking at a deep patch candidate. Furthermore, if that area exceeds a depth of more than 4 inches we consider it a deep patch as well. So basically anything larger than your typical pothole is considered to be a standard or deep patch.

What is Skin Patching?

Sometimes the surface of your asphalt gets rough and worn and depressed but the structural integrity is still intact.  If few noticeable cracks are visible and a repair is necessary, this situation is a good candidate for an asphalt skin patch.  A asphalt skin patch is basically a thin layer of asphalt that is spread out and rolled over this type of distressed asphalt surface as a way to temporarily keep the asphalt from cracking or breaking further.  Sometimes skin patching is also referred to as asphalt surface patching.  This type of repair is a short term fix, but the repair can create a visually appealing look for less cost. Just know that the problem is still lurking underneath the surface.

Asphalt Aggregate Types Used for Asphalt Patch Repairs:

Skin patches in general use a fine aggregate vs. rougher aggregate for larger patches because the edges of the patch are rolled out to super thin edges or zero thickness.  Usually, skin patching is used to not only improve the appearance of damaged pavement but also to deter water penetration from doing further damage to your asphalt.  Skin patches are generally 1½ inches or less in thickness and do not require any type of removal of existing asphalt.  So, this means that when we repair your broken asphalt with a skin patch, we are placing new asphalt over distressed asphalt without removing the old unless its required to widen and square off the edges.
