Asphalt Grinding and Milling Options
When considering a new asphalt repair project such as an asphalt overlay, it is important to utilize asphalt grinding before doing that overlay. The reason for this is to avoid creating trip hazards, and low spots. Older asphalt tends to get patched a lot over the years and creat areas in your parking lot that have more asphalt on them than others. Pretty much anywhere there is concrete or curbs in your parking lot, needs to be grinded down before a major asphalt repair is to be done. By grinding down these high spots you create a new even surface for your asphalt overlay to be installed on. It’s also important to note that grinding and milling are very green options when it comes to parking lot repairs. By grinding off old areas of asphalt and recycling the materials, you save on the amount of new material needed. Furthermore, the less asphalt you need to repair your parking lot the less trucks need to deliver, the less plants need to make, and the less human resources are needed to make those repairs possible.
Grinding / Milling Options
Empire-PLS offer many types of asphalt grinding services. We know one size does not fit all, and to be competitive on smaller projects you have to scale you tools and labor to fit that project. Below is a breakdown of the different approaches we take, based on the asphalt grinding project we're performing.
Small Asphalt Grinding / Milling Projects:
Small asphalt grinding projects are typically done with small walk behind equipment such as SASE grinders or Graco grinders. These walk behind grinders are the perfect match for the small raised piece of asphalt or concrete that needs to be lowered in your parking lot or driveway. For example, say you have one speed bump that has to be removed. Empire-PLS can send out two men with one of these grinders and be far more competitive than the next paving contractor using just one piece of equipment for all projects.
Medium Asphalt Grinding / Milling Projects:
On Medium projects Empire-PLS utilizes bobcat grinders to get the job done quickly. The bobcat grinder/miller is an attachment that is installed onto the bucket of one of our bobcat tractors. This is a hydraulic system that offers powerful cutting, at rapid speeds. These ride-on grinding cutters are very versatile and allow us to make quick work on medium size asphalt grinding jobs. One major advantage this equipment choice gives us is the ability to grind asphalt along curbs and planters in parking lots. Our equipment allows us to grind these areas of curved asphalt, where other milling equipment can damage the curbs. A good example for this equipment choice is larger areas of asphalt grinding in a parking lot. For example if you have an older parking lot that has been paved so many times that the curb face or planters have only a few inches of curb face showing. By grinding these areas ahead of time you can save time and money in labor and asphalt removal charges.
Large Asphalt Grinding / Milling Projects:
Large grinding projects require larger grinding tools. Empire-PLS utilizes asphalt pulverization equipment to get these jobs done. These are the titans of asphalt removal. Mostly utilized for roads and very large parking lots, it can remove inches off the top surface of asphalt or remove the asphalt in its entirety, at a rate of 75 feet per minute. These machines have grinders in the center that sit down on the pavement and grind the surface at fast rates. This equipment distributes the ground up asphalt into the back of a dump truck with a conveyor system where it can be taken to the asphalt plant and reused again.
