This project in many ways is like most of our asphalt paving jobs. Show up, prep the work, and install new asphalt, concrete or whatever medium we are using that day. However, it was different in some ways. This project consisted of patching back asphalt that had been removed to do some repairs on some groundwater wells in Los Angeles. Since the customer had to open up the asphalt when they did their drilling, they needed us to close the asphalt back up with some patches. Our crews not only needed to be on their best behavior in terms of safety, but we needed to be prepared. That meant hard hats, safety vest, steel toe boots, safety glasses, and several other accouterments of the paving contractor industry. We arrived at the project around 9 am and the area was blocked off and ready for asphalt. The project itself was located in the city of Torrance, and located on the cross streets of Crenshaw & Rolling Hills Ave. (yeah that was us causing some traffic backups…. sorry). The install went smooth, and without a single hitch as it should be. We where please with the work and the customer was happy too.

Asphalt Contractors Fix ADA Ramps in Costa Mesa Ca.

This week Empire Parking Lot Services was hired as the preferred asphalt contractors for a dentist in Costa Mesa, California. For those who are not familiar with the area, Costa Mesa is located in South Orange County near Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Fountain Valley, and Santa Ana. The main reasons for these requests are usually caused by one of two situations. First, a tenant /owner in a building are making some changes, and needed a permit to get those changes done. When they pulled the permit the city required them to update their ADA codes on their parking lot. The second is more common. A disabled person visited a public parking lot in which they could not gain entry into the building because the code was not up to date. After words they contact an attorney and threaten to file a lawsuit if they changes aren’t made or the tenant / owner does not settle for a large sum of money. No matter what the reason is the next logical step is to call asphalt contractors to come out and fix the problem.

How This ADA Ramp Repair Project Was Completed

When we arrived at the job-site the first thing we do is to block the work area off so that no one unknowingly wanders into the construction area while work is being done. Once the area is safe we start making marks and shooting the elevations needed to insure that the proper grades of asphalt are installed on the handicapped ramp. Once the marks where made we started working with the asphalt to build up the handicap ramp and shape it to code. We use a smart level to constantly check the grade as we pave the new ramp to insure the grade required stays intact. After the asphalt is distributed properly we rolled it using a 5 ton vibratory roller. Once the asphalt cooled we painted the lines and the proper ADA markings, installed signage and turned it back over to the customer. They were very pleased, the work passed inspection and the dentist office is now open for business.

Costa Mesa Handicapped Ramps Get Asphalt Repairs

New Speed Bumps for Private Driveway in Murrieta California

This month Empire received a call from the owner of a private residents in Murrieta California. They had a long asphalt driveway in need of  seal, as well as needing some new asphalt speed bumps installed. They called several asphalt contractors and apparently Empire Parking Lot Services was the only company that called them back. They hadn’t told us that until after the project was finished, but it really wouldn’t have made a difference to us. So the first thing Empire did was to install the new asphalt speed bumps. That part of the project actually happened about 6 months ago so that the seal coat would not lift or peel once sealed. As any good asphalt contractor knows, asphalt needs time to cure and dry well before you apply sealcoat to it. With the asphalt fully cured, we showed up this week to apply the sealcoat and stripe the new speed bumps.  We used a good thick coat of seal on the driveway and once dry, our striping crews showed up and applied the striping to the speed bumps. If you were not aware speed bumps actually go by a half a dozen names.  These names include speed bumps, speed humps, speed berms, speed retardants, speed abatement and speed tables. There are probably more than that so speak up I missed one.  Speed Bumps can be installed in several different ways. There are the most permanent choices of asphalt & concrete, than there are newer less permanent options in rubber or plastic.

We showed up on this asphalt repair project at about 1:30 pm in the afternoon. The customer informed us that it was a good time for them. The 3 areas where cleaned off and then tack coated for proper asphalt adhesion. We use tack coat to guarantee that the new asphalt will stick well to the older asphalt. Once the three areas where tack coated and cleaned we started the asphalt installation. We spread out a few tons of asphalt 1 patch at a time and we raked and feathered the edges so that they where nice and clean. Once we had that done there was nothing left to do other than compact the asphalt and iron the edges. The patches came out clean and will get The Dream Zone through there tight spot until the economy gets better. Recently, I read an article in the Pavement Maintenance Magazine about how the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) was updated in 2009. Asphalt Repair Options, You Have a Choice.

Typically the most common type of repair done these days is the asphalt patch. These patches usually fall under the 2 categories of remove & replace patches and skin patching.  Read below about these two asphalt repair options and learn about which one is right for you. The R & R patch.

Remove & replace patches are when a asphalt repair company come out and remove areas of old and broken asphalt all the way down the native soil and then replace that new void with all new material.  These patches are typically saw-cut ahead of time. This process gives the new patch a clean and neat look as well as, improves the bond between the old asphalt surface and your new asphalt patch.  Empire always recommends that you extend your repairs at least 1 foot beyond the perimeter of damaged asphalt being replaced.  This insures that any existing stress cracking won’t continue through to the new patch.

The Skin Patch

This is a very affordable option to the R&R patch.  Skin patching, also known as thin layer patching is basically a very thin patch that is about 1”-3″ in thickness.  Often times, skin patching is used fill low spots on asphalt where there is not a lot of existing cracking or breaking.  The main difference between a skin patch and a remove & replace patch is that the skin patch doesn’t require the contractor to remove any existing of your existing asphalt during this type of asphalt repair.  Typically a skin patch is used to remedy low spots in your asphalt parking lot such as bird baths. These low spots in your parking lot can be caused by a myriad of problems.  Most commonly would be irrigation run off, heavy truck traffic, broken pipes, or just settling asphalt.

Asphalt Installation in Newport Beach Ca.

About This Asphalt Installation Project

This week Empire Parking Lot Services was hired to perform an asphalt installation project in Newport Beach California.  Newport is a city located in Orange County, California.  Newport Beach is located in south county between Huntington Beach to the north and Laguna Beach to the south.  Newport Beach is one of the most lovely cities in the county and working here is always a plus.  In spite of  this being an easy project in terms of its size for any asphalt contractor, we still had a few challenges.  The project basically consisted of  patching in an asphalt  swale for water drainage and paving in a small area where a storage container was parked for the course attendants.  The swale was approximately 90 feet long by 5 feet wide and was accompanied by a small berm that needed to be paved as well.  The project took all of four hours and came out great.

How The Asphalt Installation Project Went

The asphalt project was located at a golf course utility entrance in the back of their facility.  It was a fairly simple job that only required a few men and some basic equipment.  We started by arriving to the job site at about 8 am.  Prepping the area to pave with tack coat was the first job on our list.  Tack coat allow s the new asphalt to adhere to the old asphalt.  Secondly, we unloaded the asphalt and stated spreading it out so it could be compacted.  The only tricky part about this job was creating a proper swale for water draining purposes.  The project was on a large berm and the water needed to sheet off evenly into the swale that went down the road.  Once the asphalt was laid and compacted, we shaped it a little more with irons and a compaction plate to get the desired shape.  An easy project for this asphalt contractor.
